India’s Amber Group takes control of Israeli automation firm, Unitronics

The Indian manufacturing organisation Amber Group is taking a controlling stake in Unitronics, the Israeli manufacturer of industrial controls including PLCs, HMIs, combined PLCs/HMIs, motion controllers, servodrives and variable-speed drives.
Amber plans to use the manufacturing expertise and pan-Indian presence of its IL JIN Electronics India division to accelerate innovation in Unitronics and to strengthen its position in India, as well as exploiting synergies between the two organisations.
Amber is reportedly taking a 40.4% stake in Unitronics for around $47m, by acquiring a 31.1% stake in the business held by Israel’s largest private equity fund, Fimi, which took control of Unitronics for around $32.8m in 2016. Amber is also acquiring a 9% stake in Unitronics from its co-founder, Haim Shani, for $10.4m. Shani will keep a 4.76% stake in the business.
Amber Group’s executive chairman and CEO, Jasbir Singh, says the transaction “will significantly strengthen Amber’s Electronic Division by providing a strong foothold in the rapidly-growing sector of Industry 4.0 solutions and real-time data-driven technologies”.
The acquisition aligns with IL JIN’s strategy of broadening its portfolio from areas such as consumer durables, telecoms, and defence, into industrial electronics. It says that the combined operation lays a strong foundation for accelerated growth by localising manufacturing through backward integration, enhancing competitiveness in India, and giving IL JIN better access to global markets such as the US and Europe. The US and European markets account for around 55% and 40% of Unitronics’ sales.
In 2024, Unitronics achieved a turnover of around $57m with an EBITDA margin of around 30%. It has a market capitalisation of around $110m.
“This strategic partnership with Amber Group represents a pivotal moment in our journey,” says Unitronics’ joint chairman and co-founder, Haim Shani. “Driven by a shared vision, this collaboration aims to unlock powerful synergies and scale the business to new heights.
“By joining forces, we intend to accelerate growth, enhance capabilities, and create lasting values for all stakeholders, including our team, partners, and customers,” he adds. “I express full commitment to the company’s future and excited to work alongside our new partners as we enter this transformative phase together”.
Shani will continue to serve on Unitronics’ board and work closely with Amber’s leaders.
Amber Group currently operates in three segments: consumer durables, including HVAC systems; electronics and PCBs; and railway subsystems and defence. It has around 30 manufacturing plants located across India.
Unitronics, founded in 1989, worked in areas such as automated parking systems, packaging and palletising systems, before moving into automation and controls products including what it claims was the world’s first all-in-one controller, which integrated a PLC with an HMI and on-board I/Os. This “game-changing” controller, launched more than two decades ago, eliminated time-consuming tasks such as wiring PLC panels and setting up communications. It also allowed all functions to be programmed in a single environment.
Unitronics now employs around 200 personnel, more than 80 of them in North America. It has more than 160 distributors, operating in more than 55 countries.
