Hyundai’s mobile robot tilts to cope with uneven surfaces

Hyundai is targeting a variety of industrial and other applications with its mobile robots

Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled its first mass-produced mobile robot platform aimed at industrial and other applications. An unusual aspect of the MobEd (mobile eccentric droid) platform is its ability to stabilise itself on uneven or inclined surfaces by adjusting its posture and height.

Hyundai says that the new platform will “revolutionise” mobile robotics with its eccentric mechanism, enabling precise posture control and adaptability to a variety of environments, from narrow indoor paths to rugged outdoor terrains. By integrating adaptive motion technology, the platform eliminates the need for environment-specific robot designs.

“Beyond a simple mobility platform, MobEd offers a next-generation solution adaptable to diverse industries and everyday life,” says Dong Jin Hyun, vice-president and head of the Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics lab. “MobEd will set new standards in the global robotics market and accelerate a future where humans and robots coexist.”

The robot has been designed to simplify autonomous navigation, delivering accessibility and ease-of-use without requiring technical expertise. A wide touchscreen controller and an intuitive 3D interface make operation easy for all users. The platform’s AI-powered sensors combine LiDar and cameras to recognise and avoid obstacles, while predictive navigation algorithms ensure safe and precise operations in crowded and confined spaces.

Designed as a modular platform, MobEd is aimed at applications ranging from delivery and research, to logistics and video production. Its customisable, modular design supports universal mounting rails and APIs, enabling simple integration of attachments for various tasks.

Mass production of the MobEd is due to start in the first half of 2026. The robot will be available in two configurations:

  • MobEd Basic: this model will provide users with the flexibility to build custom applications, without pre-installed autonomy features; and
  • MobEd Pro: equipped with advanced autonomy, this model has extra sensors and functions, including a LiDar-camera fusion and a “follow-me” mode.

The Basic version can carry payloads of up to 57kg, while the Pro version handles 47kg. Both can travel at up to 2.8m/s, and will operate for up to four hours on a charge of their 1.47kWh batteries.

At MobED’s core are proprietary drive-and-lift (DnL) modules that integrate posture control, driving and steering motors for multi-directional movement. The platform’s eccentric-based posture control mechanism maintains level positioning, adjusts heights dynamically, and adapts to irregular or inclined surfaces.

A control algorithm inspired by multi-joint robotics ensures stability on uneven terrain and reliable navigation over obstacles such as curbs. These capabilities allow the platform to perform in industrial as well as indoor/outdoor environments, where precision and adaptability are needed.

For navigation, LiDar sensors and cameras perceive the robot’s surroundings in real time, supporting predictive navigation, obstacle avoidance, optimal route generation, and recognition or tracking of moving objects. The AI-powered detection system ensures safe, reliable operation.
