Flexible machinery drive targets OEMs

At the recent SPS/IPC/Drives show, ABB unveiled a new drive system targeted at machine-building OEMs. The 0.75-45kW ACSM1 Machinery Drive is designed to be used with synchronous or asynchronous motors (including high-torque and servo machines) in dynamic positioning and synchronising applications.

The scalable modular drive is based on ABB`s DTC (Direct Torque Control) technology and operates in open- or closed-loop configurations. DTC allows torque regulation at servo-like speeds. The drive is suitable for centralised or decentralised applications in demanding applications such as conveyors, cranes, paper mills, and plastics processing plants. A flying start function allows the drive to be synchronised with a rotating machine, with or without feedback.

The machinery drives work with a variety of feedback technologies — including resolvers, and absolute and incremental encoders — and incorporate intelligent interfaces to process encoder signals. They support most main fieldbus technologies, including Profibus, DeviceNet, CANopen and Ethernet.

More details about the machinery drive are expected to be released soon.
