European trio combine to create ‘world’s fastest automated bin-picker’

Three European automation suppliers have joined forces to create what they claim is the world’s fastest automated bin-picking system. The Dutch AI vision specialist Fizyr, the Swedish robotics manufacturer Cognibotics and the Norwegian 3D machine vision developer Zivid, say that their robotic system can pick up to 2,000 items an hour with an accuracy of 99.5%.
The system combines Cognibotics’ HKM1800 robot arm – said to have the longest reach and fastest bin-to-bin pick-and-place capabilities on the market – with Zivid’s 2+R 3D camera and Fizyr’s Panoptic vision software which is used to identify items, establish picking priorities and grasp positions, and to verify placements.
Zivid’s camera captures accurate point clouds, even with shiny and transparent objects, in less than 150ms, so does not limit the cycle time of the Cognibotics fast-moving robot arm. Fizyr’s software: handles segmentation, shape detection and material detection; sequences the picking order; identifies the best location to grip objects; selects the most appropriate gripper; and directs the order of operations to achieve the 99.5% success rate.
“The combination of Cognibotics, Zivid, and Fizyr brings unprecedented reach, speed and adaptability to bin picking,” comments Cognibotics CEO, Fredrik Malmgren. “Our HKM1800 robot, with its 10m² reach and up to 2,000 picks per hour, enables groundbreaking solutions and layout possibilities previously thought impossible.”
“For years, logistics and automation professionals have been working on solutions to tame the chaos and improve throughput speeds of item intake in highly dynamic environments,” adds Fizyr CEO, Ken Fleming. “By combining three best-of-breed components into one solution, we have delivered unprecedented speed and accuracy.”
“Automated picking solutions are limited by the weakest link in the component chain,” says Mikkel Orheim, Zivid’s senior vice-president for sales and marketing. “Partnering with companies like Cognibotics and Fizyr that consistently push the boundaries of what’s possible, inspires us to deliver cameras like the 2+R series that excel in the most challenging environments.”
Cognibotics and Zivid are both members of Fizyr’s partner programme designed to develop and deliver best-of-breed real-world automation systems to integrators. Their combined bin-picking technology is already being incorporated into warehouse management systems by integrators.
