EtherNet/IP system cuts cabinet wiring times by up to 80%

Rockwell Automation has announced an EtherNet/IP-based wiring system for cabinets that, it says, can cut wiring times by up to 80%. The EtherNet/IP In-cabinet Solution is designed to help achieve smarter, faster and more connected manufacturing operations.
Traditional hard-wiring of items such as motor starters and pushbuttons in control panels can hinder companies wanting to improve productivity and reduce downtime. These panels can limit data access and complicate system upgrades.
The new system uses flat, seven-conductor cables to streamline communications between panel devices, simplifying system integration, boosting real-time data access, and helping manufacturers to make faster, better-informed decisions.
The benefits that Rockwell is claiming for the new system include:
- Faster installation When implemented in accordance with recommended standards, the system can help to cut wiring times by up to 80% compared to traditional hard-wired installation
- Space optimisation The compact design allows efficient use of cabinet space, enabling more devices to be installed in the same footprint, reducing panel sizes
- Improved data access Fast, real-time communications between devices can help to boost productivity
- Scalability It is easy to expand installations and adapt to future networking needs without major infrastructure changes.
In addition, the system’s plug-and-play design simplifies configuration, commissioning and maintenance, reducing disruptions to production schedules.

Early adopters are already seeing benefits. Volga, a Brazilian manufacturer of electrical, mechanical and automation control systems, is reporting dramatic improvements after adopting the new technology.
