Control Techniques’ new drive is dedicated to controlling PM motors

Control Techniques has announced a variable-speed drive designed to maximise the efficiency of sensorless permanent magnet (PM) motors, cutting their running costs while optimising system performance.

The Commander C300 PM – an extension of the existing general-purpose Commander C family – maximises PM motor efficiency in variable-speed and variable-load applications by adjusting its operation to match changing conditions. This is said to result in significant energy savings and to reduce wear-and-tear on machinery, extending equipment lives.

Only five parameters need to be set, making commissioning fast. The drive is built to cope with harsh environments, and comes with a five-year warranty.

Built-in functions include a PLC for simple programming, a dual STO safety function and PID control. Multiple plug-in communications modules allow the VSD to be integrated with common industrial fieldbuses.

Energy savings can be monitored using the drive’s onboard energy meter, which provides detailed insights into energy usage (in kWh) and running costs, allowing informed decisions to be made to optimise energy consumption.

The new drive has built-in pump-specific functions such as the PID controller that adjusts its performance in response to changes in pressure and flow. The on-board PLC makes advanced control easy, eliminating the need for an external controller.

A downloadable Solar Pump Solution provides cost-effective control of water pumps in challenging environments and includes pump-specific features for single and parallel configurations such as: dry run prevention; pump cleaning; no-flow detection; pipe fill; and tank full/well dry control.

In HVAC installations, the drive is claimed to deliver energy savings of up to 96% by matching the system’s output to actual demand. This ensures that the HVAC system operates optimally, cutting energy waste, while air flow is monitored to enhance environmental comfort. A fire mode function maximises the availability of a building’s smoke extraction in the event of a fire. Once activated, the drive will run until failure.
