Congatec and Codesys join forces to virtualise real-time control

Congatec, the embedded and edge computing specialist, has formed a strategic cooperation with Codesys, the developer of hardware-independent control software. Together, they plan to deliver integrated, virtualised, real-time control platforms for mixed critical workloads, bringing a new level of flexibility and efficiency to industrial automation.
This partners will combine congatec’s aReady.VT virtualisation technology with the Codesys’ control runtime system, with the aim of transforming industrial controllers into fully-fledged IEC 61131-3 PLCs for automation tasks, purely through software.
To achieve this, congatec’s conga-zones hypervisor will separate the embedded computing platform into different zones. General purpose operating systems will run in dedicated zones in parallel with Codesys’ PLC-based real-time control, combining deterministic real-time behaviour and secure isolation on one system. The companies say that the combination of the hypervisor with a Codesys PLC will deliver the reliability, virtualisation, flexibility and deterministic performance, that will be vital as industry moves towards control technology virtualisation.
