Accenture buys Systema to bolster its high-tech manufacturing capabilities

The global services company Accenture has acquired Systema, the German-headquartered supplier of software and consulting services for manufacturing automation. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Accenture says that Systema’s experience working for semiconductor manufacturers and other high-tech companies will bolster its abilities to support clients in these sectors.
Dresden-based Systema, founded in 1993, offers manufacturing system integration, consulting and custom software services to discrete manufacturers in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, defence, consumer electronics, medical, food & beverage, and retail. It has specialist skills in SAP MES systems and critical manufacturing.
Systema has more than 240 employees, and operations in Europe, Southeast Asia, and North and South America. It will join Accenture’s Industry X practice.
Accenture is particularly interested in Systema’s semiconductor manufacturing expertise. “The production of semiconductors is complex and highly specialised, and Systema’s deep expertise in the industry will expand our capabilities and grow our business in ways we couldn’t achieve organically,” says Christina Raab, Accenture’s market lead in Austria, Switzerland and Germany.
Despite its advanced products, the semiconductor industry still uses a significant amount of legacy equipment in its production processes. Steps such as material flow and machine change-over are often still not fully automated. This is particularly the case in Europe, where Accenture says that manufacturers need to optimise their production facilities through automation to remain competitive.
Systema’s expertise includes digitally connecting current and legacy production equipment and systems. It excels at upgrading, optimising and extending traditional MES (manufacturing execution systems) with data analytics, which these systems often lack but are crucial to increasing output and cutting costs.
“We are combining Systema’s semiconductor and high-tech industry experience and capabilities with Accenture’s global network and ability to scale to offer services covering the whole value chain, from supply to logistics and manufacturing,” says Sarat Maitin, leader of Accenture’s Industry X practice for digital engineering and manufacturing and infrastructure and capital projects, in Austria, Switzerland and Germany. “Our ambition is to become a partner to the industry that helps clients in Germany and Europe secure competitiveness in a market increasingly under pressure.”
