AUTOMATION FOR MANUFACTURING

ABB invests $110m to boost US manufacturing facilities

ABB is investing $110m to expand its manufacturing and R&D in the US

ABB is investing $110m in four manufacturing sites in the United States to expand manufacturing and R&D of its electrification portfolio to help users to improve energy efficiency and uptime, and cut energy costs. The investment will create nearly 200 new jobs, and is in addition to around $500m that ABB invested in the US from 2022-2024, including a new $100m manufacturing facility and innovation laboratory in New Berlin, Wisconsin and a $40m factory in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“This $110m investment in the US is part of our long-term strategy to support future growth in our biggest global market,” says ABB CEO, Morten Wierod. “Demand is being driven by key trends, from the surging power needs of AI in data centres, to grid modernisation and customers improving energy efficiency and uptime to reduce their costs. Our investments will ensure we can meet growing demand from customers across North America in line with our local-for-local strategy.”

The new investments include:

  • $15m to create a new production line for ABB’s Emax 3 air circuit-breakers in Senatobia, Mississippi. The breakers improve the security and resilience of power systems in large facilities with high power demands, including data centres, manufacturing sites and airports. The new line is expected to open in 2026.
  • $30m to double the size of ABB’s Richmond, Virginia, facilities adding a new test centre, warehouse and assembly lines. The power quality and protection products made in Richmond are used to protect critical systems against electrical failures. The new facility, opening in Q4 2025, will create around 100 new production and engineering roles.
  • more than $30m to increase the size of a facility in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to accommodate three new production lines for smart circuit-breakers and switching devices. The expansion will create 90 new skilled jobs by the end of 2026.
  • $35m to increase the capacity of ABB’s manufacturing facility in Pinetops, North Carolina, to support expected demand for advanced low- and medium-voltage grid components from the utilities, and for data centres and industrial facilities. The upgraded facility will open in 2026.

Earlier this year, ABB announced a $120m investment in its facilities in Selmer, Tennessee ($80m) and Senatobia, Mississippi ($40m). A further $20m investment in Selmer will boost its production capacity.

In 2024, ABB’s US revenues were almost $9bn, accounting for around 27% of the group’s global turnover. With around 17,000 people employed in the US, ABB has nearly 40 manufacturing, distribution and operational facilities in 20 states, including nine major R&D centres. Around 75-80% of the revenues that ABB generates in the US are from products made in the US.
