Cloud-based platform will enhance VSD performance

01 March, 2018

At the Hannover Fair in April, Siemens plans to unveil a digital platform for using and evaluating VSD (variable-speed drive) data, based on its MindSphere cloud-based open IoT operating system. Called Sidrive IQ, it will give users of networked drive systems direct access to functions designed to support production and maintenance tasks. Siemens says it will improve the productivity, reliability and serviceability of drive systems over their entire lifecycles.

At Hannover, Siemens will demonstrate Sidrive IQ being applied to a low-voltage drive system, but the technology will also be available for use with medium- and high-voltage systems, and could be retrofitted to upgrade existing systems.

The new platform will allow automated monitoring of drives-based operations, creating greater transparency and providing plant and machine operators with insights into what is happening in their drive systems. Using connection technologies such as Siemens' Simotics Connect for LV motors, the platform will capture relevant operating data and use it to determine the system’s status. It will allow users to evaluate and remedy problems, identify preventive measures to avoid unscheduled downtimes, and improve their maintenance plans and implementation.

The measured data can be combined with digital twins to provide measured values, status and operational KPIs, service messages, technical product data as well as spare parts information. Siemens says it will save time and effort spent on data acquisition, as well as simplifying visual analysis and speeding up intervention during both production and maintenance – for either a single drive or an entire fleet.

The platform can be used to compare operating, status and maintenance information to help optimise processes across not only for different systems, but also across several locations.

Siemens also plans to offer a series of service packages that will allow users to link their drivetrains digitally, identify weak points at an early stage, remedy system faults, and optimise their service and maintenance planning.
