Current monitor adapts to suit its application

At the recent SPS IPC Drives show in Germany, Murrelektronik announced a modular current-monitoring system that can be adapted to suit an application. The Mico Pro system monitors control and load currents, identifies critical conditions, signals limit loads, and switches faulty channels off in a targeted way. A patented tripping process ensures that trips occur as late as possible, but as early as is necessary.

The system is designed for 12V or 24V DC applications. The 1–4 output channel modules have widths from 8–24mm and are connected without tools. They can be replaced at any time. There is a choice between modules with fixed tripping currents (2–16A in six steps) or variable versions (1–10A or 11–20A). Built-in potential distribution simplifies cabinet wiring.

Diagnostic and control signals are connected via a bridging system consisting of two bars and spring contacts that can handle up to 40A. Inputs and outputs are connected via push-in spring clamp terminals.

Each channel has an LED status indicator, and digital status signals can also be sent to a PLC. The power module provides diagnostics for the entire system, while the variable modules offer channel-specific diagnostics.

When the tripping current reaches 90%, the channel LED flashes green and a digital status signal is triggered. If this current is exceeded, the channel is switched off, the LED flashes red, and another status signal is sent. The channel can be reactivated via a PLC or by pressing a button. PLC signals can switch components on or off for each channel without needing extra contactors, relays, or optocouplers.

The system can be cascaded, with channels connected to further Mico Pro stations, thus saving time and money, especially for applications with decentralised switch cabinets.
