Wireless insulation tester and DMM can be used to test drives

20 November, 2015

Fluke has announced a handheld tool that combines the functions of a wireless digital insulation tester with those of a true-rms digital multimeter (DMM), and includes a low-pass filter, allowing accurate measurements to be made on motor drives.

The Cat III 1kV / Cat IV 600V rated Fluke 1587 FC insulation multimeter can also perform insulation tests from 0.01MΩ–2GΩ, and deliver insulation test voltages from 50V–1kV.

As part of the Fluke Connect system of software and wireless test tools, the DMM can used with the free Fluke Connect smartphone app to provide:

•  PI/DAR (polarity index/dielectric absorption ratio) measurements with graphs to identify moisture and contamination problems;

•  memory storage via the app, avoiding the need to write down results, and saving data to the Fluke Cloud for historical tracking;

•  temperature compensation using the app to help establish accurate baselines and historical comparisons; and

Fluke's combined insulation tester and digital multimeter includes a low-pass filter

•  historical tracking and trending to identify degradation over time, allowing real-time decisions to be made in the field.

Technicians can use the app to record and store measurements from the instrument, then combine data from several other Fluke Connect test tools to create reports in the field and share them in real time with colleagues.

The instrument incorporates safety functions such as auto-discharging capacitive voltage, and detecting live circuits to stop insulation tests from taking place if a voltage higher than 30V is measured on the system being tested.
