Atex-compliant geared motors handle harsh conditions

16 September, 2015

The Brazilian motor-maker WEG has launched a range of Atex-compliant geared motors which combine its high-efficiency W22X motors with gearboxes from its Austrian subsidiary, Watt Drive. The motors, available in IEC frame sizes 71–800 and efficiency classes up to IE4, are suitable for harsh processing applications in hazardous areas in almost any industry.

“The new geared motors are a testament to WEG’s expertise in explosion-proof and highly efficient motors as well as Watt Drive’s specialism in high-quality, robust gear technology,” says Klaus Sirrenberg, director of WEG’s low-voltage products business in Germany. “We have developed technologically harmonised Atex-compliant geared motors that work reliably even under the most demanding conditions, while taking energy efficiency to the next level.”

The geared motors can be used for group I category M2 and group II applications in hazardous area zones 1/21 and 2/22. The Atex 95-certified adapters for motors in frame size 71–225 allow motors with IEC B5 mountings to be attached to the modular Watt gearboxes without modification. For frame sizes 100–225, torque transfer between the motor and the gearbox is handled by form-fitting, zero-backlash claw couplings, with vibration and shock dampened by an elastic coupling spider.

A variety of drive and flange options are available, including solid-shaft versions with flanges, and hollow-shaft versions with shrink discs. The gearboxes have impact-resistant hollow-shaft or shrink-disc covers.
