Deritend sells Preformed Windings to Clyde Blowers

08 July, 2014

Clyde Blowers Capital (CBC), headquartered in East Kilbride, is buying Sheffield-based Preformed Windings from Deritend Industries for an undisclosed sum. Preformed Windings, which produces coils for traction motors and high-voltage motors and generators, will join CBC’s expanding electric machines group, which also includes the generator and motor manufacturer, Parsons Peebles.

The sale will allow Deritend to focus on its core business of providing asset management maintenance services.

“We’re pleased to have found a good home for Preformed Windings, as the nature of their business is an excellent fit,” says Deritend’s group managing director, Richard Hale. “The sale will also enable Deritend to concentrate on what we do best by providing whole-life-cost asset management services for our customers. Our long-term plans are to grow the company organically and through potential acquisitions over the next few years.”

“We have enjoyed a strong relationship with Preformed Windings as preferred coil supplier for new units and rewinds for a number of years,” explains Frank Barrett, CEO of CBC’s electric machines group. “This acquisition not only delivers self-sufficiency in coil manufacture, it also offers excellent prospects for Preformed Windings to continue to grow its reputation as a first-class independent coil manufacturer supporting a number of OEMs and service companies.”

Clyde Blowers says it intends to increase investment in Preformed Windings’ products, plant, premises and people, and to create new job opportunities. “We’re also going to be extending the range of HV coils and delivering a more flexible offer to meet the needs of our customers,” adds Kerr Picken, business strategy director for the electric machines group.

Deritend MD, Richard Hale: the sale will allow us to concentrate on what we do best

“Even in these early days as part of Clyde Blowers, it is clear that the planned investments in people, plant and premises will enable us to develop our product range, manufacturing systems and capacity, thus allowing us to serve our growing customer base with a first-class service,” comments Preformed Windings’ general manager, Ricky Guest, who joined the company last December from Sulzer Dowding & Mills.

The acquired business will continue to operate from its current base in Sheffield, where it employs about 35 people. It has been designing and manufacturing armature, diamond and concentric copper coils for large motors and other rotating AC and DC machines for more than 45 years.
