Automation centre aims to raise WEG’s profile in Europe

11 June, 2014

The Brazilian drive technology supplier, WEG, has opened an automation centre in Germany to improve support for its European customers and to strengthen its automation components business. As well as basing automation specialists at the new centre, WEG is opening a workshop with test stands, a training centre and warehouse space for its automation components.

The main aim of combining these activities at one location is to raise awareness of WEG's frequency inverters, soft-starters and servodrives in Europe.

The centre, at WEG’s Watt Drive site in Unna, will be led by Fábio Gonçalez, recently appointed automation manager for Europe and the Middle East, and Bernd Kaiser, WEG’s automation and drive systems manager for Germany. The company is recruiting more staff for the expanded premises and relocating experts from other sites to Unna.

The centre brings together experts from WEG’s German headquarters in Kerpen with others from Watt Drive. It will lead to a closer integration of Watt Drive gear technologies, particularly for relatively low power levels, with automation components such as frequency inverters.

The in-house test stands and training centre will allow WEG to respond better to customer needs and to raise awareness of its automation portfolio. For example, frequency inverters, soft-starters and servodrives can be set up, repaired and modified with custom software at the centre.

WEG's new automation centre is designed to raise awareness of its wider portfolio

“Establishing the automation centre is a strategic move to increase customer awareness of our automation portfolio in Europe,” says Klaus Sirrenberg, WEG’s director for low-voltage products in Germany. “In Brazil, we are the market-leader in automation, but in Europe we are presently primarily known as a manufacturer of electric motors. Our goal is to be regarded as a solution provider, and the new automation expertise centre enables us to get even closer to our customers and offer them improved support. I think we're heading in the right direction.”

To create the automation centre, WEG has expanded the Watt Drive premises in Unna to occupy the whole building. There is space for further growth in sales and service operations. WEG is also leasing more warehouse space to handle its growing portfolio of automation products in Europe.
