Sensor is ‘first’ to combine object and colour detection

27 June, 2013

The German sensor manufacturer SensoPart claims to have produced the first vision sensor that combines object and colour detection in one device. It says that Visor Color sensor fills a gap between switching colour sensors and costly image-processing systems, and will open up new applications.

SensoPart expects the sensor to be used, for example, to automate inspections that were previously performed by humans, and to expand existing inspection processes to include colour analysis, thus improving object detection.

Combining colour and object detection also opens up various applications involving the inspection and sorting of objects according to shape and colour – such as quality inspection of complex components in the automotive industry and in machine-building.

For example, it can check for completeness and position, as well as differentiating and sorting parts. The sensor can also be used to inspect colour screens and LEDs.

Extensive options for colour analysis parameters allow reliable detection even when there are slight differences in shade, or when working with luminous components.

Two in one: SensoPart's sensor combines object and colour detection

Instead of the monochrome image chip usually found in vision sensors, the new device uses a WVGA or SXGA resolution colour chip. The higher-resolution version (1.3 megapixels) allows precise analysis of image details as well as the assessment of larger sections. The sensors are available with integrated optics and LED lighting.

Logic functions allow inspection results to be assigned to one of six digital outputs. If needed, a further 32 signal outputs can be added using an optional I/O box. Complex inspection tasks can be configured without needing a detailed knowledge of image processing. A software package, provided with the sensor, offers configuration and viewing functions.
