Device turns TVs into machinery monitors

Red Lion Controls has launched what it claims is the first device that allows machine status messages and key performance indicators (KPIs) to be shown on any TV, monitor or projector with a DVI/HDMI interface.

The ProducTVity Station (PTV) collects data from automation components using a library of more than 200 drivers, that allow it communicate with PLCs, drives, motion controllers, barcode scanners and similar equipment. It can also be expanded, using I/O modules, to accept digital and analogue inputs from a variety of sensors.

An easy-to-use graphical interface allows users to create high-definition displays that can combine KPIs with other messages. The device generates a 720p (1,280 x 780 pixel) DVI output that is compatible with 720p and 1080p/i TVs with DVI or HDMI interfaces. A built-in datalogger can record the KPIs and other events, for later review, and can synchronise the files with an FTP server or Microsoft SQL Server for further analysis.

The PTV can also extend production monitoring to remote personnel by providing email and text alerts. A built-in Web server allows productivity information to be monitored via a networked PC or smartphone. If enabled, this allows maintenance personnel to take full or partial control of a system remotely, allowing them to make changes without having to make a site visit.
