♦  SKF is selling an operation that produces cages for roller bearings at its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, to the Japanese manufacturer Nakanishi Metal Works (NKC), who plans to invest in and develop the operation, which employs 130 people. The move is part of SKF’s plan to sell off component manufacturing that it does not see as being core to its activities. 
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        
♦  The global market for smart sensors will reach $6bn by 2015, driven by improvements in performance and efficiency, predicts Global Industry Analysts in a new report. Smart sensors – digital devices that perform extra functions such as signal processing, self-diagnosis and fault detection – are finding new applications, the reports says.

♦  Just weeks after Sweden`s Beijer Electronics took a 37% stake in the Taiwanese industrial communications specialist Korenix, it has raised its stake to 92% to acquire the business. Korenix, which employs about 70 people, is expected to have sales worth around £5.8m this year – a 57% increase on 2010. It will operate alongside Beijer’s Westermo subsidiary.

♦  Panasonic Electric Works has merged with Sunx to form Panasonic Electric Works Sunx. As a result, more than 2,000 Sunx sensor products will be rebranded as Panasonic.

♦  US-based Kaydon Corporation is buying Hahn-Gasfedem, a German manufacturer of gas springs, tension springs and dampers. Hahn, which had sales worth around $20m last year, will join Ace Controls as part of Kaydon’s velocity control products division.

♦  The power semiconductor manufacturer Semikron has formed a 50:50 joint venture with the Swiss company drivetek, which specialises in electric drives and control technologies for electric and hybrid vehicles. The SKAItek JV will provide motor control software for Semikron’s SKAI 1 IGBT and Mosfet inverter systems.
