Versatile linear drives offer a plethora of choices
Published:  19 November, 2008

SPS logoOriga – now part of Parker Hannifin, following its acquisition from the Hoerbiger group – has unveiled a new generation of electric linear drives that offer users a variety of choices, including screw, belt or linear motor drives.

The Origa Drive System (ODS) has been designed to offer much higher performance than earlier generations, with improvements in accuracy, repeatability, force and speed. For example, the screw-driven version – the first to be available – has a repeatability that is 2.5 times more accurate, and a force capacity 66% higher, than the previous generation.

The choice of drive technologies will allow users to pick the version that best suits their needs, rather than being forced along a particular technology path. The ballscrew version will be followed shortly by the belt-driven option, with the linear motor version due in about a year’s time.

There will also be a choice between three types of profile: slim; standard; and a reinforced version for heavy-duty, unsupported applications. A 2m span of the reinforced version will support a weight of one tonne. Users can also opt for guides that use plain, roller or recirculating ball bearings.

Another choice is between IP20 open versions and IP54-protected covered versions, which are lubricated conveniently through external nipples without having to remove the protective cover or dismantle the drive.

Limit switches for both end and reference positioning sensing, can be located where users want to put them. They are available in reed contact or electronic switching versions, both terminated at connectors in the end-cap. Another option is a contactless, electromagnetic incremental distance-measuring system for applications requiring precise positioning throughout the length of the drive.

Further possibilities include over-run protectors, cable chains, and pneumatic or electric brakes, suitable for vertical or horizontal applications.

The ODS-SB ballscrew version is available in stroke lengths up to 3.2m and pitch options from 5–25mm. It can operate at up to 1.25m/s and offers a repeatability of ±0.02mm. It has a specified life of 8,000km.
