ABB achieves an Ex certification first

19 September, 2008

ABB says it is the world’s first motor manufacturer to receive certification for its qualification programme for facilities that service hazardous area motors. The certificate, granted by the French body, BV-LCIE, allows ABB to issue certificates of authorisation to Ex workshops or repair facilities that comply with its qualification programme, which meets the requirements of IEC/EN 60079-19 and ATEX Directive 94/9/EC.

These certificates mean that the workshop is qualified to operate under ABB’s responsibility and confirm that it has been audited by the company, guaranteeing that ABB Ex motors repaired or overhauled there are safe.

Rob Wood, ABB’s channel manager for motor in the UK, says that the scheme will be rolled out across ABB Motor Service Partners in the UK.

"ABB is the first motor manufacturer to obtain this type of certification," he adds. The move represents "a significant step forward, which will further strengthen ABB’s position in markets like the chemical, oil, and gas sectors where Ex equipment is used."
