Siemens sells machine vision business to Microscan for $11.5m

16 September, 2008

Siemens has sold its US-based machine vision business, just three years after it bought the former RSVI Acuity CiMatrix, located in New Hampshire. The new owner is Microscan, the Washington-based designer and manufacturer of precision data acquisition and controls, which has bought the operation for $11.5m. It will use the business to expand its existing vision and smart camera portfolio.

Siemens will now focus its vision activities on industrial identification, and on its RFID and 1D and 2D code-reading products. As part of the sale agreement, Siemens has signed a contract with Microscan to co-develop new automatic identification and data capture products.

"Vision products for identification and inspection are a growing aspect of the precision data acquisition and control market," says Microscan president, Jeff Timms. "The acquisition of the Siemens Machine Vision business brings with it a depth of expertise in data matrix and vision product design that is second to none. Combined with Microscan`s deep experience in data acquisition solutions, the purchase of this business tremendously augments our product portfolio and brings with it a unique and complementary offering to our customers."

Microscan is owned by the UK-based Spectris group.
