IEE, IMechE and IIE decide not to merge - yet

After lengthy talks, the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers), IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers), and the IIE (Institution of Incorporated Engineers) have decided not to merge - for the time being, at least.

Although the talks have identified that there would be "considerable benefits" to all three bodies from working more closely together, they have decided that merging the three to create a single Institute "is not the most appropriate means of delivering these benefits".

In a recent statement, the three bodies say that "the differences in our current ways of working and in our internal structures means that there would be considerable effort and cost in creating a new Institute that would detract from achieving our individual strategies". However, they add that the creation of a single body "remains a realistic ambition for the future".

The exploratory talks between the Institutions have identified "a great deal of common ground, particularly in our vision of engineering in the 21st century and the role of Institutions in it".

The IEE, IMechE and IIE have agreed to consider a range of initiatives for closer collaboration that will "aid convergence and bring benefit to members, the engineering profession and employers".
