July News in Brief

01 July, 2008

º  Profibus and Profinet International claims that there are now more than 25 million Profibus nodes installed in manufacturing and process plants around the world. This represents a growth rate of 25% over the past year and the organisation says there are now probably more Profibus nodes installed than all other systems combined. The Profibus market is estimated to be worth $50bn and a further five million nodes are expected to be installed by 2009.

º  Semikron has unveiled a new generation of IGBT drivers based on full digital signal processing. The Skyper 52 drivers allow isolated control signals to be transmitted and protection schemes to be configured, enabling engineers to design without needing to add isolated circuitry. The result is fewer components, and higher reliability. The driver is suitable for parallel-connected IGBT modules with total currents up to 9kA.
