Torque sensors can handle radial loads

The US force measurement specialist, Sensor Developments, has developed a range of rotating torque sensors incorporating a bearing system that allows them to withstand high radial loads. The 01367 sensors can handle loads up to 40kN and overturning moments of more than 2kNm.

Most conventional torque sensors need floating housings to minimise extraneous loading other than the torque applied to the shaft. The new sensors can eliminate the need for pillow block bearings and can reduce torsional inertia, thus improving the stiffness of a driveline. The sensors use non-contact digital signal transmission with a wide frequency response, high sample rates, and high-level analogue outputs. Optical encoders to measure angles and speeds are available as an option.
