Paliwal quits ABB and the automation sector

09 May, 2007

Dinesh Paliwal, the ABB executive who led the efforts to reshape the conglomerate’s automation operations in recent years, is leaving the company at the end of June. He is taking up a new position as chief executive of US-based Harman International Industries, which specialises in audio and automotive electronics products and owns brands such as AKG, JBL, Harman Kardon and Lexicon.

Paliwal, who is currently president of ABB’s Global Markets and Technology business and a member of its group’s executive committee, joined the AccuRay Corporation in 1985 as a systems engineer and project manager. AccuRay was subsequently purchased by ABB and Paliwal held a variety of positions within the organisation. In 2001, he joined ABB’s executive committee where he was responsible for the Automation Technologies division, before assuming his current role in 2006. Since 2004, Paliwal has also been chairman and chief executive of ABB’s North American operation, and chairman of its Indian subsidiary.

While Pailwal was in charge of the Automation division, he oversaw the streamlining of the operation from 11 businesses down to three, designed to make it easier for customers to deal with the conglomerate.

"Dinesh Pailwal has an outstanding and long global career within ABB and he made very strong contributions as a key member of the top management team to move ABB forward," says ABB president and chief executive, Fred Kindle. "The executive committee and his ABB colleagues regret his departure and we will miss Dinesh’s energy and professionalism, and wish him well in his new role."
