Profibus releases fluid power profile

Profibus International has published a "profile" that lays down rules that fluid power products must follow before they can be marketed as being "Profibus Fluid Power Technology compliant". The 116-page document describes the functionality of a family of interchangeable proportional valves, and hydrostatic pumps and drives for use with Profibus systems.

It defines the variables and parameters that designers must adhere to when developing transmitters, actuators, controllers, as well as visualisation and operator panels intended to be connected to Profibus networks. These devices will need to comply both with the Profibus protocol specification, and with the new profile, before they can be called compliant.

Profibus has become the first field bus to be accepted as a Chinese Professional Standard. The publication of the standard by the China Machinery Industry Federation, means that Profibus can be specified by Chinese institutions for use in machinery and automation systems. In an allied move, the Chinese Test Laboratory in Beijing has been accredited as a Profibus test centre - the eighth in the world. These developments are expected to boost the uptake of Profibus in China.
