Encoder profiles extend DeviceNet and CIP

Several enhancements are being planned for DeviceNet and EtherNet/IP - the industrial communications protocols which use the Common Industrial Protocol, or CIP. At the same time, ODVA, the body responsible for CIP developments, has announced that it is reorganising the DeviceNet specification to align it more closely with Ethernet/IP.

The new encoder capabilities will extend CIP network applications to include standard profiles and objects for a variety of encoding devices, including single-turn, multi-turn and linear types, and velocity, acceleration and cam functions.

A second enhancement, called "device self-documentation", will support Electronic Data Sheets (EDSs) stored in devices. This will give instant access to device parameters such as model numbers, ratings, and configuration information, potentially improving diagnostics and cutting downtime.

Another development, called QuickConnect, will allow users to establish connections immediately after applying power to selected devices on a DeviceNet network. This is expected to be particularly useful for applications such as robotics that require rapid device changeovers. It will allow one group of nodes to replace another without having to power down the whole network.

In future, CIP will be defined in one volume, while specific network adaptations such as DeviceNet, Ethernet/IP and CIP Safety, will be covered in separate volumes.
